Doug's Gym

Doug's Gym, one of the few privately owned and operated "old school" gyms in US offers a wide variety of workout options for all kinds of body types. Doug is a strong believer in free weights. In fact, Doug was a proponent of working out with free weights years before it was main stream, and he is considered a pioneer in the weightlifting movement. Doug has over 50 years of experience training professional athletes, body builders, cheerleaders, and models. Doug’s clients included many of the stars of the film Pumping Iron. However, Doug’s gym is truly a place for people from all backgrounds, and today’s clients range in age - from the early 20’s to the 70+ crowd, strength – from beginner to top performer. The gym has a steady flow of clients but it is not overcrowded. Doug’s personable style and easy going manner make his gym a very welcoming place. The gym’s atmosphere is authentic and his clients are encouraged to just be themselves and focus on working out. That indeed is refreshing in a city where many gyms and their members are chasing the latest fitness and fashion trends.

Doug offers personal training as well as regular memberships. The first thing Doug does is consult with each individual to jointly determine their goals. He offers four different training programs:

  • Reduce Weight – Continuous movement with light weights.
  • Gain Weight / Build Muscles – Train the major muscle groups with heavy weights and low reps.
  • Conditioning - 10 to 15 different exercises with 10-12 reps combined with boxing and other cardio training.
  • Strength training - One to five reps with progressively heavier weights.

Doug can be reached on 214-742-3758 and the opening hours for the gym is M-F 11-8 Sat 11-6.

Doug

Doug Eidd was born Nov 4, 1930. After graduating from high school he served in the Air force in the Korean War between 1950 and 1953 as a Physiotherapist. After getting back to Dallas he worked in several Gymnasiums in town and became a well known figure in the sports community. In the summer of 1962 he was offered to buy a gym located on Commerce Street downtown Dallas. The gym had just been opened for six months but the current owners couldn't make a profit and decided to sell it. Doug renamed the gym to Doug’s Gym and opened it on September 1, 1962.
